Chapter 2
After school Mouse headed straight to the tree house in the woods near the playground. He was the first to reach it and climbed up the ladder that hung along the tree trunk.
Once inside he pulled out an old dusty book that he had found there. It contained a variety of practical jokes and funny magic tricks. He had no idea who it, or the tree house had once belonged to, but he was glad he had found both. Soon the other kids were arriving. Once they were all assembled together in the club house, Mouse couldn't stop smiling.
âSo, it's the first week of school,â he began dramatically.
âFirst day,â Rebekah corrected.
âWell actually the first day is over,â Max began to point out.
âNo, no, the first school day is over, but the first day of school lasts all day-â
âOh stop it!â Amanda pleaded as she clapped her hands over her ears. Rebekah hid a smirk and high-fived Jaden behind Amanda's back.
âOkay, okay,â Mouse burst out laughing. âWhat I'm trying to say is, this only happens once a year. I think we need to do something to make it special.â
âThe new principal Mr. Davis is having a special assembly at the end of the week to celebrate,â Amanda informed them all. âThe art club is helping to make posters for it.â
âPerfect!â Mouse said gleefully. âI was thinking we can perform a magic trick for the whole school.â
âYou mean in front of the whole school?â Max asked nervously. âI don't know about that.â
âWhy not?â Rebekah shrugged slightly. âWe know most of the kids, and those we don't we'll probably know by the end of the year. It could be fun. If you pick a good trick,â she pointed out.
âWell I was thinking of,â Mouse flipped through the book toward the back and pointed to the page that had a big snowflake on it. âMaking it snow in September!â
âIs that even possible?â Jaden asked skeptically.
âWell it's all about the weather patterns,â Max began to explain in a tone full of certainty.
âNot real snow,â Mouse interrupted before they were all lectured. âThat's the trick. We make everyone think it's snowing, but it's really not.â
âSounds like fun,â Amanda shrugged. âWill there be glitter involved?â her eyes shined at the thought.
âNo glitter,â Rebekah said firmly. âThat stuff gets everywhere.â
âSo it's decided,â Mouse announced. âI'll talk to Mr. Davis tomorrow and see if he'll let us perform at the assembly.â
